2025 Bravo Violin and Piano Youth Competition

 

Saturday, April 5, 2025 1:00pm-4:00pm

Registration Deadline: March 31, 2025

 

Two divisions -

For ages up to 16 (By the date of April 5 2025)

  • Violin division
  • Piano division

PRIZE - FIRST PRIZE $100, SECOND PRIZE $50 for each division

 

Requirements-

 

VIOLIN - 


All selections must be original and published music brought on the day of the competition.
Memorization is required.  

 

AGES UP TO 16:

 

First
     Solo of a Concerto: The piece should include contrasting techniques and demonstrate shifts up to (or beyond) 5th position.

 
Etude:
     Select one from Mazas’ Forty Selected Studies for the Violin, Op.36, etudes #11 to #18

 

AGES UP TO 11:

 

Piece
     Selection: One piece from Suzuki Books 3 or 4. A different piece with similar or greater level may be used for the competition but will require approval by the committee beforehand (email info@clc-houston.org).

 
Etude:
     Select one from Wohlfahrt’s Sixty Studies for the Violin, Book 1, Op. 45, etudes #3, #4, #6, or #8.

 

PIANO -

 

All selections must be original and published music brought on the day of the competition.

Memorization is required.

 

AGES UP TO 16:

 

Required

Piece: One selection from the Faber Series, Levels 2B to 5.

 

 

Free

Choice: One piece chosen by the performer. (e.g., selections from Disney Series by Faber or Jazz, Rags & Blues by Martha Mier, etc.).

 

AGES UP TO 11:

 

Required

Piece: One selection from the Faber Series, Levels 1 to 2B.

 

 

Free

Choice: One piece chosen by the performer (e.g., selections from Disney Series by Faber or Jazz, Rags & Blues by Martha Mier, etc.).

 

Jury Evaluation Criteria


Participants will be evaluated on the following aspects:
1. Overall Performance:

  • Cohesion and polish of the performance.
  • Adherence to the style and mood of the repertoire.

2. Musicality:

  • Expressiveness and interpretation.
  • Ability to convey emotion through dynamics and phrasing.

3. Technique:

  • Accuracy in notes, rhythm, and articulation.
  • Mastery of required technical skills (e.g. shifts, vibrato).

4. Tone Quality:

  • Consistency of tone and clarity of sound.

5. Stage Presence:

  • Confidence, posture, and overall presentation.

Each category will contribute to the final score, with an emphasis on both
technical proficiency and musical artistry.

For each category, the top two prizes will be awarded:

  • First Prize: $100
  • Second Prize: $50
